The small village of Opont, in the province of Luxembourg risks losing its school. To avoid this catastrophic scenario, the establishment must find six new students. Four in kindergarten and two in primary.
“It would be dramatic“, worries the director Mélissa Rosset. “Not only for the village, because the closing of a school in a small village is the death of this one. Also for families whose parents will have to take their children to schools in more distant villages, it destabilizes an entire family organization.“.
But the clock is ticking… Officially, Mélissa must find these six students by tomorrow! Fortunately, the Wallonia-Brussels federation has given a reprieve until the end of September. However, the director made the decision to set herself a limit earlier. “That means everyone has to turn around for October 1st. Both the children who would have stayed in school here at the Opont school and all our teachers and the team behind them. Humanly speaking, it’s very complicated to make such a decision overnight..”
To find the six desired little ones in time, everyone does their part: school, municipality, and even the parents. Communication is mainly via Facebook.
Each year, around ten schools must close in the Wallonia-Brussels federation, each time in small villages like this one. “Unfortunately, there are not many children left in our small village“, regrets Marjorie Marlet, the alderwoman for education. The main reason given by the alderman is that it is the elderly (and therefore without children) who come to settle in the area the most.
