The Verviers Criminal Court on Monday sentenced a man prosecuted for drug trafficking to 30 months in prison and a fine of 8,000 euros.
The defendant, domiciled in Herstal at the address of his future wife, operated in Verviers from the home of his ex-companion and mother of his children. Despite the discovery of 1.6 kg of cannabis in the cafe he rented rue du Brou in Verviers, he categorically denied the facts with which he was accused.
Without official employment, “the defendant made several transfers to Morocco, took over a café for 10,800 euros in Verviers. He bought furniture and a new car for his companion”, detailed the King’s prosecutor, adding that the he man had also acquired a property worth 90,000 euros, in the name of his father. Regarding this last purchase, the prisoner claimed that the funding came from “family generosity” and “a solidarity movement” within a Verviers mosque.
However, this line of defense did not convince the court, which considered the prejudices established. The man was sentenced to 30 months in prison and a fine of 8,000 euros. He is also ordered to pay an amount of 3,200 euros in legal costs.
