At least 26 people have been killed in an airstrike in Ethiopia’s troubled Amhara region, according to a hospital worker. More than 55 other people were injured in the attack on the center of the town of Finote Selam on Sunday, the town’s hospital worker, who wished to remain anonymous, said on Monday. According to eyewitnesses, a busy marketplace was the target of the attack.

In Amhara in north-west Ethiopia, protests have been taking place since spring. There has been serious unrest since the beginning of August. According to the Ethiopian intelligence service, the regional Fano militia occupied several towns in the region, but retreated to smaller villages a few days later. As a result of the unrest, the government declared a state of emergency for the second most populous region in the East African country. The state airline Ethiopian Airlines temporarily suspended air traffic.

In April, the Ethiopian government decided to disband the autonomous regional special forces in the multinational state. The militias in Amhara – including the Fano group – were still important government allies in the conflict between Tigray and the central government that lasted several years. However, the civil war ended with a peace agreement in November last year. The government in Addis now wants to limit the power of the regional units.
