LONDON • The government is set to make it mandatory for messages promoting discouraging smoking to be included on cigarette packs sold in the UK, a report said. Reports indicate that the government is considering draft proposals in this regard. Cigarette packs will include messages highlighting the health and economic benefits of quitting smoking.
The Department of Health has revealed that around 76,000 people die every year in the UK from smoking, according to figures released by the NHS. The government has come forward with the new move as a part of eradicating the habit of smoking which is increasing among the people.
Currently, the number of smokers in the country is at an all-time low, but still regarding six million people, or 13% of the population, are smokers. This has been revealed in a survey conducted for the Office for National Statistics in 2021. Warnings were printed on cigarette packets in the UK as early as 50 years ago. But according to the new move, the government is planning to print new warnings related to this inside the cigarette packets as well.
Health Secretary Steve Barclay has stated that increased smoking is placing an increased burden on the NHS, the economy and the public, and that is why new measures are being taken to eradicate it. The consultation process related to the government’s new proposals will be conducted till October. After that the new reform will be implemented. The government has promised to eliminate smoking in England by 2030.
