Kuwait Government’s Initiative: Introducing Flexible Working Hours to Boost Productivity and Reduce Traffic Congestion

Kuwait City: Plans to bring back flexible working hours for government employees in Kuwait. Local media Al-Qabus reported that discussions regarding this have started under the leadership of the Demographic Committee.

Indications are that the final form of the new schedule will be ready soon. The schedule for the first phase will be piloted and will be finalized following the authorities’ assessment. Flexible working hours will be implemented in the Ministry of Education before the start of the new academic year. Working hours start between 7:00 AM and 8:30 AM.

Working hours for employees will be seven hours per day. It is also suggested to allow a grace period of 30 minutes. The recommendations of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Education and the Civil Service Commission will be submitted to the Cabinet. There are indications that buses will be allowed for school students as part of reducing traffic congestion.

Meanwhile, employees in essential services will be allowed to determine suitable hours according to the nature of work. Currently there are five working days in a week. It will start on Sunday and end on Thursday. The introduction of flexible working hours is expected to reduce severe traffic congestion, increase worker productivity and improve work-life balance.
