Poland’s Security Concerns: Deploying 10,000 Soldiers on Border with Belarus amidst Russian Mercenaries and Migration Crisis

Poland plans to station a total of 10,000 soldiers along its border with Belarus. Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak said in a radio interview on Thursday. The background to the decision is the concern of the Polish government with regard to Russian mercenaries in Belarus and border crossings by migrants.

The Polish government had already announced on Wednesday that it wanted to move another 2,000 soldiers to the border with Belarus – twice as many as requested by the border protection authority. This doubles their number, in addition to hundreds of police officers and border guards. As justification, Deputy Interior Minister Maciej Wasik referred to migration pressure at the border when announcing the decision. He accused the Belarusian authorities of organizing illegal migration.

Poland worried regarding private army Wagner

Poland is also concerned regarding the presence of fighters from Russia’s private army Wagner, who were sent to Belarus following a brief mutiny in Russia in June. Fears were heightened last week when two Belarusian military helicopters briefly invaded Polish airspace in what Warsaw saw as a deliberate provocation.

Meanwhile, the Polish military announced that they were looking for a lost missile detonator in the border area with Belarus. After a patrol flight, it was found that one of the helicopters was missing a missile ignition. However, the detonator poses no danger. The armed forces urged people to contact the police if they should find the detonator. (dpa)
