A police officer on duty who was allegedly exposed to Fentanyl while testing the white powder of an arrested drunk driver had to be rushed to a hospital following temporarily losing the use of his arms and legs.

“What happened yesterday is a perfect example of the dangers law enforcement faces every day from poison in the streets. Fortunately, our assistants are well trained and equipped with Naloxone, which allowed […] to potentially save the life of a co-worker,” Flagler County, Florida Sheriff Rick Staly said in a Facebook post on Saturday.

The day before, George Clemons, a 61-year-old driver suspected of being intoxicated, had been handcuffed following a hit and run. In his vehicle, the agents then found white powder, an empty beer can and an alcohol shooter.

But by wanting to carry out a test of the substance on the bonnet of a vehicle, and “despite the wearing of personal protective equipment”, the agent Nick Huzior would then have started to show signs of distress, can we see on the images from his body camera shared by the police force.

“I feel dizzy. I can no longer feel my arms and my legs”, can we hear him throwing at his colleagues.

The latter would then have administered two doses of Naloxone, a product used to stop the effects of Fentanyl, before he was taken care of by paramedics. Fortunately, the officer would have already been discharged, according to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

For his part, the driver would have been charged with several counts of possession of narcotics, including possession of Fentanyl following the results of the white powder proved positive, as well as hit and run.
