Brock Purdy he is the coach’s favorite quarterback Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco. That became apparent last year, when the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft took over late in the season and guided the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game.
But what the 2023 preseason will determine is who will replace Purdy in the event that the former quarterback of Iowa State get hurt or have problems next season. All eyes have been on Sam Darnold and Trey Lance, two former top-three draft picks, as their training camp battle now carries over to preseason.
Lance launches an unusual touchdown
On Sunday, Lance started San Francisco’s preseason opener once morest the Las Vegas Raiders. After three three-and-out throws, the former North Dakota State player capped off his followingnoon with a rare touchdown throw.
Given the camera angle, it was initially thought that Lance had thrown an interception on the pass. But following a deflection, the ball fell into the arms of tight end Ross Dwelley.
Lance had trouble fending off pressure from the Las Vegas defense as the Los Angeles offensive line 49ers he was unable to prevent him from being shot down four times. However, the 23-year-old had an efficient day in his first competitive action since he suffered an ankle injury last September.
Sam Darnold’s answer
Lance played the first half at Allegiant Stadium while former New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold took control of the offense for the second.
Darnold, who played for the Carolina Panthers last season, is trying to resume his NFL career. The 26-year-old Orange County native responded almost immediately following halftime, throwing a 40-yard dart to seventh-round draft pick Ronnie Bell.
With two preseason games to go, the race between Lance and Darnold is very close, and no one knows how the saga will play out before Week 1.
