In just over a month, players will be able to take off alongside Starfield, Bethesda’s latest role-playing game. Everything will be available on PC and Xbox Series… But which is the best version?
On September 6th, Starfield will take us on an extraordinary journey… More than a thousand planets to visit, branches to not know what to do with, a complete customization of his ship and character. Yes, following Skyrim and Fallout 4, Bethesda studios seem to hold their new nugget. But which platform to choose to take advantage of it? PC ou Xbox Series X|S ? Just for you, the JV editorial team has looked into the matter. Fasten your seatbelt: take off.
Thank you Game Pass
Before listing the pros and cons, let’s talk regarding the commonalities. Starfield will thus arrive on September 6, 2023 on PC and Xbox Series X | S, whether in solo version (physical / dematerialized) or via the Game Pass. To take advantage of Bethesda’s new role-playing game, you don’t need to pay full price – €69.99 or even €79.99 -, just sign up for Microsoft’s subscription service (from €9.99 € per month). In any case, with a digital version, you can enjoy “Play Anywhere”, with the possibility of switching without constraint from the Xbox version to the PC… For those who choose to download, the title requires 125GB of storage. ‘free space. Finally, if you really want Starfield “hard”: note that only the Xbox Series edition contains a Blu-Ray.
30 fps sur Xbox Series
This is therefore a first argument to put to the benefit of the Xbox Series, for fans of boxed games. However, for Microsoft’s home console, you have to know something… Starfield will only run at 30 frames per second whether on X or S ! It was Todd Howard himself – director of the title – who confirmed it. For the moment, no patch has been announced to double the framerate. On Xbox Series X, the RPG will be entitled to a resolution in 4K, and on Xbox Series S, it will be 1440p.
If you absolutely want 60 fps, it’s obvious: you will have to fall back on the PC version. Bethesda has already announced the specs for its desktop baby. Beyond rather predictable requirements for a game of this magnitude (Intel Core i7 6800K at least; GeForce RTX 2080 ideally), you absolutely must have an SSD type storage space. If you are aiming for a higher resolution and framerate than the Xbox Series X render, then be sure to check out these kinds of details. For now… Bethesda hasn’t mentioned a frame-per-second limit for the PC version of Starfield. Obviously, your components will determine this aspect of the experience. The “ultra-wide” resolution does not seem to be on the agenda, as evidenced by an official video.

The question of “mods”
In any case, on the computer, you will be entitled to another advantage: mods. As with other Bethesda games, options created by the community will be welcomed with open arms on Starfield. Their full support was confirmed by Todd Howard two years ago. It is obviously on PC that players will be able to enjoy it first! As for mods on Xbox Series X | S, to date, no official information is circulating… But it’s certain: the option will arrive sooner or later on the Microsoft home console – as was the case with Skyrim on its time.
Good point for the PC, but which may come with some additional concerns in terms of optimization – compared to the Xbox Series! And as much to say that the latest game from Bethesda (Fallout 76) is not necessarily very reassuring on this point. Will the living room machine version guarantee a more stable experience at launch? We’ll see… September 6, 2023.
