A team led by Professor Stamatakis of the University of Sydney, Australia, tracked the activities of approximately 22,000 men and women. The researchers used artificial intelligence to observe the records of subjects wearing activity trackers. It analyzes people’s movement patterns in seconds to determine when they ran fast or hurriedly. After that, they checked the cancer diagnosis records of the subjects for 7 years.

As a result, people who moved quickly for regarding 3 minutes a day, climbed the stairs quickly, or rushed to take the subway were 30% less likely to die of cancer than those who did not. It was also effective for those who did not exercise other than fast movement.

Vigorous Intermittent Lifestyle Physical Activity (VILPA), which stands for intense, intermittent physical activity, consumes less time and brings more health improvement effects. Instead of a full-blown workout, just briskly moving for a short time a day can give you similar benefits to a proper workout.

Study author Professor Stamatikis said, “The minimum necessary to reduce health problems is less than one minute a day, but the most appropriate point is to be busy for three to four minutes.”

However, this does not mean that you can replace all exercise with 3-4 minutes of movement per day. It should be taken as meaning that even people who are not interested in exercise can see the health benefits of being busy throughout the day.

Although it is true that VILPA is correlated with reduced cancer incidence, this study alone does not confirm that VILPA directly reduces cancer risk. The research team explained that VILPA can be seen as having an effect on reducing cancer incidence while improving our body’s health, immune system, and body inflammation.

The study was published on the 27th of last month in the medical journal ‘JAMA Oncology’ published by the American Medical Association (JAMA).
