WAC averted a defeat once morest Austria Lustenau thanks to a penalty goal by Bernhard Zimmermann in the fifth minute of added time. Coach Manfred Schmid’s team finally drew 1-1 (0-0) once morest Lustenau in the third round of the Bundesliga on Saturday. After a desolate first half, Vorarlberg took the lead immediately following the restart through Namory Cisse (46th), but ultimately missed their first win of the season.
WAC trainer Schmid called for a different face following the meager performance in the Carinthian Derby (2:2) and changed his starting eleven in four positions. Newcomers Thomas Sabitzer, Augustine Boakye, Ervin Omic and Nikolas Veratschnig were allowed to start this time. At Lustenau, however, Lukas Fridrikas, the most dangerous man in goal, was absent due to an inflammation of the pubic bone. In his place, the only 20-year-old Cisse made his debut in the Bundesliga.
Among the 3,250 spectators in the Lavanttal Arena were numerous flood action teams and helpers, whom the WAC and the state of Carinthia had invited to the game as a thank you for their commitment. These saw a one-sided first half with a multitude of chances for the home team. After a failed pass from Lustenau goalie Domenik Schierl, Sabitzer found the first top-class goal, but was denied by the goalkeeper who rushed back into the goal (8′). Schierl then defused a long-range shot from Omic before Boakye flicked the ball onto the crossbar (23′).
Lustenau let himself be constricted in his own half for long stretches, also had major problems in building up the game and never really managed to provide relief. The WAC kept up the pace and had more good opportunities. A shot by Rieder was blocked at the last moment by Lustenau defense chief Matthias Maak (26′). Jonathan Scherzer pushed the ball miserably past the goal on his own in front of Schierl (30′). Due to the lack of efficiency, however, it was goalless in the cabins.
The hitherto one-sided course of the game was turned upside down in the second half following just 28 seconds. Torben Rhein, who came on at the break, lured Dominik Baumgartner the ball and put it across to Cisse, who only had to push in (46′). With the lead behind them, Lustenau got into the game much better and acted more courageously.
However, the WAC might not build on the dominant performance before the change of sides and almost had to accept the next setback. Scott Kennedy brought down Anthony Schmid in the penalty area and referee Sebastian Gishamer gave the penalty without hesitation. The fouled Schmid started himself, but failed with a central attempt by Hendrik Bonmann (71st).
Substitute Mohamed Bamba had two attempts to equalize in the closing stages. First he failed with a lob at Schierl (87′), a little later from close range at the post (92′). In the end, the WAC got a well-deserved draw. Debutant Bamba was brought down in the penalty area and Bernhard Zimmermann converted the penalty effortlessly (95′). The Carinthians remained undefeated in the third game of the season.
