New episode of our series of consumer tests. As a reminder, every week we test products on sale in the five supermarket chains (Delhaize, Colruyt, Aldi, Lidl and Carrefour) by comparing the major brands with “white goods” or distributor brands. The final score for each product is out of 20 points: 2.5 points for the appearance of the packaging, the appearance of the product, the nutritional value and the readability of the label, and 5 points for the taste and the quality- price. This week, we tested the sangrias.
The great brand test: for strawberry ice cream, more than half of the brands fail! (COMPARATIVE)
Appearance of the packaging: there was a bit of everything, but we can’t say what is, in general, faced with a product presented in a “high-end” way. A large plastic bottle for Aldi (the Don Simon brand is also sold in other stores, Editor’s note), a cubi for Carrefour, an orange juice box for Colruyt or even a large 1.5L glass bottle for Intermarché and the big brand, Quint. Only Delhaize made a good presentation effort with a bottle of wine and a nice label.
Appearance of the product: we had trouble with Aldi’s sangria, which smelled very strongly of wine. It did not make you want to taste it at first. On the other hand, it was also quite fruity on the nose and quite dark in color, as for the big brand, which on the other hand had a much lighter and more pleasant nose. For Delhaize, we were treated to a very light robe, as for Carrefour, with lighter and fruitier notes. It was even better at Colruyt, but much worse at Intermarché. No one wanted to taste it following smelling it.
The big brand test: for white wine, a very good reference at less than €5 a bottle! (COMPARATIVE)
Nutritional value: we’ll be brief: drinking alcohol is not good for your health.
Label readability: this test will not serve as a reference for this criterion. Apart from Delhaize, it was very average for everyone, especially for the sangria sold at Aldi where you mightn’t read anything at all.
Taste: despite the lack of desire to taste it, we still attacked the Intermarché sangria… and it was as bad as it looked! Very strong, very vinous and with a taste of fruit candy: to forget. On the other side of the ranking, we find the sangria offered by Colruyt. The balance was perfect between all the ingredients. Between the two, we were suspicious but ultimately rather pleasantly surprised.
The great brand test: here are the best spare ribs to put on your barbecue (COMPARATIVE)
Value for money: three formats are offered for sale, 3 l, 1.5 l or 75 cl. Here are the prices in order: Carrefour (3 l – €4.59), Quint (1.5 l – €3.69) Delhaize (75 cl – €3.35), Aldi (1.5 l – 2 €.99), Colruyt (1.5 l – €2.19) and Intermarché (1.5 l – €1.99).
