Flood in Siguiri: the population exposed to the risk of disease

Like the capital Conakry, the prefecture of Siguiri was also the victim of floods on Friday August 11, 2023. The National Agency for Emergency and Disaster Management in Guinea (ANGUCH) made an inventory which shows a risk of water contamination and therefore a high risk of epidemics.

According to the agency, in this prefecture which falls under the administrative region of Kankan, 3,645 people are affected in the urban commune, 1,830 people in Kintinian and 1,112 in Maleah. The sewage caused the flooding of 300 water points and latrines. This situation exposes thousands of individuals to contagious diseases. Unless health authorities take urgent action, Guinea’s most populous prefecture is at risk of an outbreak.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the microbiological contamination of water Drinking water can be the source of the transmission of several diseases, such as: diarrhoea, cholera, dysentery, typhoid fever and poliomyelitis. The organization’s figures indicate that illnesses linked to water contamination lead to more than 485,000 consecutive deaths each year.

Following the flooding of both these water points and latrines, the population of Siguiri is deprived of drinking water and exposed to all kinds of diseases. The risks are enormous, immediate measures are needed to save these citizens.
