The prune harvest started at the beginning of August in Switzerland. It will last until September 10. The Swissfruit association expects a harvest of 3000 tonnes. Due to the high temperatures of the past few weeks, the quality of the fruit will be good, it announced on Saturday.

However, the umbrella organization regrets the violent hailstorms which will have a negative influence on the harvest in Valais and, locally, in eastern Switzerland. By the end of the season, more than 400 tons of prunes should be harvested each week.

The share of organic fruit is around 2.6%, specifies Swissfruit. The popular Fellenberg variety will be available from Tuesday. The main harvest of this variety will start on August 21 and end on September 9.

Prunes are grown in all fruit-growing regions of Switzerland. According to Swissfruit, prunes are “one of the favorite fruits” of the Swiss, who consume nearly 1.5 kilos per person each year.
