Granita, the perfect summer drink: refreshing, sweet and fun. Very popular with children, slushies are not without risk for them, however, according to a study carried out by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Food Standards Scotland (FSS), the British and Scottish food standards agencies, reports Sky News.
The study highlights the presence of glycerin in this drink. The substance that allows the liquid not to freeze completely and to keep the texture a liquid minimum which makes it specific. But consumed in large quantities, glycerin can have harmful repercussions on health, relays Slate. It can cause headaches and nausea.
Today we have issued new voluntary industry guidance on glycerol in slush-ice drinks. We’re advising that they should not be sold to children four years of age and under. Also, free refill promotions should not be offered to under-10s. More info: https://t.co/xypUQVBukj

Thus, two cases of glycerin poisoning have been identified in the UK in 2021 and 2022 in children by the FSA and FSS. The two victims had to be hospitalized and it turns out that they had both consumed granitas.
The risk of poisoning with a single granita is low. But several frozen drinks ingested in a short time can cause hypoglycemia or even loss of consciousness. “Symptoms of glycerin poisoning are usually mild, but it’s important for parents to be aware of the risks,” says an additives manager at the FSA.
The two agencies speculate that other cases of glycerin poisoning may have occurred in recent years without the symptoms being attributed to the consumption of granita. They therefore recommend that professionals add the minimum amount of glycerin to their products. “We are grateful to those who have already taken action […] and to those who have informed us that they will shortly,” the FSA said.
