The Edge 40 was launched with top-of-the-line features, combined with some savings, to be the most affordable model in the advanced family to which it belongs. But to present an interesting option to the user, he needs to show that he has more advantages than one of his main rivals: the Galaxy S23.
Will Motorola’s flagship-sized smartphone be able to face Samsung’s compact top on an equal footing? Let’s find out the answer now, in this Comparative of TudoCelular.

Motorola Edge 40
And we mightn’t fail to highlight the design of these devices with the visuals that give the face of their respective lines. Edge brings the square block with large lenses, as has become the brand’s standard. The Galaxy already has the cameras arranged individually on the lid.
At the front, there are no differences in the option for the notch in the form of a centralized hole and the biometric reader integrated into the display. The Korean stands out for its more compact body, despite having the same weight as the competitor.
Samsung Galaxy S23
Manufacturers opted for a metal construction, but went their separate ways at the rear. While Samsung has inserted the traditional glass, Motorola varies according to the color, either with a traditional smooth plastic, or a leather that can be difficult to clean. In any case, the IP68 certification is present on both, for protection once morest dust and water.
Don’t expect them to have a microSD card slot in the chip drawer. That is, no storage expansion here. The sixth generation Wi-Fi and NFC are present in the pair, but the S23’s Bluetooth 5.3 is more advanced than the 5.2 version present in the Motorola.
With more design benefits, the Galaxy S23 lands at the front of the scoreboard.

Bodies
The Edge 40 has a 6.55-inch OLED screen, which is larger and better front-facing than the S23’s 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel. The Korean has the superior brightness of the duo, but that does not mean that the rival is not a good option to use away from home.
Both deliver Full HD + resolution and support for HDR10 + technology, to improve the display of streaming services. Motorola still takes the best in fluidity, as it has inserted a refresh rate of 144 Hz, while Samsung has kept its cell phone limited to 120 Hz.
With a few more details, we give Edge a point.

As
The manufacturers didn’t skimp on the audio part, so we have a stereo system in them, which takes advantage of the call speaker as a secondary channel. In practice, this means more immersion in the user experience.
Both Edge and Galaxy provide good sound power, without distortion at maximum volume. The sound emitted by them also does not disappoint in the excellent balance between bass, medium and treble.
Motorola and Samsung no longer put a physical headphone jack on their respective high-end lines, nor do they ship a compatible accessory in the box.
Without major differences in this regard, we give a tie in sound.

System
These devices come out of the box equipped with Android 13 as a native operating system. Although Motorola guarantees two software updates for this model, it still does not reach the four updates promised by Samsung, with five years of security packages.
The interface of both offers great fluidity, even more so combined with a high refresh rate. 5G technology is also present in them, to allow an always fast mobile network.
The Edge 40 stands out for having the classic gestures to turn on the flashlight or open the camera, while the S23 has the Good Lock customizations as a strong point. Some of their features seek the same functions, such as shortcuts to apps through Motorola’s Sidebar, or Samsung’s Edge Screen. Not to mention the ability to turn your phone into a portable PC, through Ready For on Edge or through DeX mode on Galaxy.
The greater weight of longevity gives the point to the Korean.

Performance
The Edge 40 debuts MediaTek’s Dimensity 8020 platform. The S23, on the other hand, comes equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. What performance do we have in practice with them? The Galaxy proved to be the fastest in our multitasking tests, with a 24-second advantage over the competitor.
Benchmarks confirm the superiority of the Korean model. It easily beats the indicators and scores almost 80% more on AnTuTu than Edge. Games run well on these two devices, with slightly better performance on the S23’s GPU.
Thus, we give point to Samsung.

Battery
Motorola put a 4,400 mAh battery in its smartphone. The capacity is below the most used 5,000 mAh on the market, but it is still above the 3,900 mAh delivered by the Korean. Does this impact practice? That’s not what we saw. Even with the smaller battery, the Galaxy clocked in at nearly 25 hours in our standardized tests, 50 minutes longer than what we saw with the Edge.
When we go to loading, the situation changes. The Edge 40’s 68W TurboPower needs 43 minutes to complete the process. Almost half an hour more than what we saw with the Galaxy.
Samsung marks for greater autonomy; and Motorola scores for the fastest recharge.

The Edge contains two rear cameras, once morest three present in the Galaxy set. The two are led by a 50 MP main sensor. Despite having good sharpness and many details, the Motorola model takes pictures with more artificial textures. Something that doesn’t happen with the S23, with its noise control, the most vibrant colors and the right HDR. At least, their night mode works well in recovering details without losing quality.
The Edge 40’s ultrawide fails to present darker images in some scenarios. On Samsung’s handset, we get better color and sharpness results here. At least Motorola brings the autofocus differential to the wider lens, which allows you to record high quality macros.
The Korean is the only one to come with a telephoto camera, which generates very sharp captures of objects from afar, thanks to its three times optical zoom.
We give point to the Galaxy in cameras.

The Edge’s camcorder is limited to 4K resolution at 30 fps. If you want to record in Ultra HD at 60 fps, you’ll have to opt for the Galaxy, which also supports 8K video at 30 frames per second and offers the best image quality and audio capture of the duo. Moreover, both have optical stabilization and agile focus.

The Edge’s front camera delivers 32 MP, once morest the Galaxy’s sensor’s 12 MP. Does this mean having better selfies on the Motorola model? It is not like that in practice. The Edge 40 squeezes four pixels into one, for 8-megapixel selfies, which compromises on the level of detail.
At this point, the S23 pleases more, delivering improved HDR, more vibrant colors and getting photos taken at night right. Not to mention the ability to shoot head-on in 4K at 60 fps.

These devices became officially available in Brazil. The Edge 40 arrived in the country at a suggested price of R$4,000, cheaper than the R$6,000 charged at the launch of the Galaxy S23. In current retail, the Motorola model can already be found for around R$3,000, while Samsung’s is still close to R$4,000.
Therefore, Edge closes the duel with the last point.

Done
Motorola tried to compete with Samsung’s basic top without having an entirely flagship set, but managed to show its advantages over the rival. The Edge 40 won with its larger screen and more fluidity, the battery that provides faster recharge, despite being behind in autonomy, in addition to being the cheapest of the duo in the Brazilian market.
But if you are looking for a more complete top of the line, the Galaxy S23 will serve you better. It has a more compact design and premium construction, a longer system life and faster multitasking performance. Not to mention its set of cameras, which brings better results with the rear sensors, in selfies and videos.
