The results of a study conducted by scientists at the University of Lodz, Poland, showed that the number of necessary walking steps per day is less than previously thought.
The European Journal of Preventive Cardiology indicates that the number of daily walking steps needed to reduce the risk of serious diseases, including cardiovascular disease, is actually less than previously thought.
According to the magazine, the researchers studied the data of 17 scientific studies, involving 226,889 people, and it became clear to them that the risk of exposure to a serious health condition, regardless of the cause, decreases with every additional 500-1000 steps. Increasing steps by 1,000 steps reduces risk by 15 percent, and increasing steps by 500 steps reduces risk of cardiovascular disease by 7 percent.
Walking 3,967 steps a day reduces many health risks, and 2,337 steps a day reduces the risk of fatal cardiovascular disease. However, the researchers mightn’t set an upper limit, because the benefit of walking continued to increase up to 20,000 steps a day.
It should be noted that lack of physical activity affects more than a quarter of the world’s population. More women than men (32 vs. 23 percent) and people in high-income countries than in low-income countries (37 vs. 16 percent) because they do not get enough physical activity.
