Airbus has selected Goodyear to supply the tires of the future A321XLR with a very long range, while its president Guillaume Faury is already talking regarding new engines for the A220 familyin particular for a possible model A220-500.
Goodyear announced on June 14, 2023 that it had been selected by the European aircraft manufacturer as the tire supplier for its new A321XLR. THE Goodyear Flight Radial Tire “will be one of the approved tires when the aircraft enters service in 2024,” said the American equipment manufacturer. The Goodyear Flight Radial “is one of Goodyear’s most innovative aviation tires, with technologies and features that promote dimensional stability for longer life and improved cut resistance. The radial construction of the tire supports a large number of landings and the optimized bead design helps to reduce its weight”. This ultralight tire has received system certification from Airbus, “paving the way for increased efficiency and reduced weight”.
« We are happy to have been chosen by Airbus to equip its new A321XLR with our tires. says Octavian Velcan, General Manager of Goodyear Europe Middle East Aviation Division. ” Our main objective when designing this tire was to find a balance between the necessary robustness and lightness. We achieved this in close collaboration with Airbus, and defined an optimized heel design and aerospace-grade materials to meet their needs. ».
These innovative tires “are the latest in a long technological heritage from Goodyear, which celebrates its 125th anniversary this year by continuing to provide the tires and services that move the world”.

Regarding the A220 familyAirbus CEO Guillaume Faury says he is open to engine manufacturers other than Pratt a Whitney, which equips the A220-200 and A220-300 among others and encounters major problems. Possible A220-500 might be offered with two engine options « if the engine manufacturers are ready to go “, declared the leader in Aviation Week, like the A320neo family (P&W GTF and CFM International LEAP) of which he says ” very satisfied ».
« If we might over time on the A220 have a twin engine option, especially with a newer variant like the -500, that’s something we’d really like to see “, explained Guillaume Faury.
Remember that an enlarged version of the single-aisle designed in Canada, the smallest Airbus aircraft, would directly compete with the Embraer E2 et Boeing 737 MAX (7 and 8), but also theA320neo – whose sales are declining in favor of the big brother A321neo. At the end of May 2023, Airbus posted 785 orders for the A220 family, including 692 for the A220-300 model alone; more than 260 A220s had been delivered by then.
