Recognizing Red Bull’s Formula 1 Success: Mark Webber Speaks Out

Mark Webber believes that Red Bull’s successes in Formula 1 sometimes lack recognition.

Fifth team in history to have won more than 100 Grands Prix, Red Bull a rejoint Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes et Williams in this very closed club. The image of the Austrian structure, engaged in F1 since 2005, is however not always what it would hope for. The team, sometimes reduced to the term “can manufacturer”, the main and historical activity of the company, has nevertheless accumulated 11 world titles to date (6 among the drivers, 5 among the manufacturers) and imposes its domination with Max Verstappen.

Born from the takeover of Jaguar almost twenty years ago, Red Bull has built a cutting-edge team and developed ultra-modern activities on its Milton Keynes campus, including beyond the track. After eras of collaboration with Renault and then Honda, the team is now setting up its own engine department to develop, from 2026, its power unit with the support of Ford.

In terms of prize list and means, Red Bull has nothing to envy to the factory teams of the major car manufacturers involved in Formula 1. Nevertheless, Mark Webberwho played seven seasons under his colors (2007-2013), believes that what is “necessarily one of the most beautiful success stories of Formula 1” is not always recognized at its fair value.

“If it was a builder, maybe there would be more praise and notoriety”observes the former Australian pilot with Motorsport.com. “In essence, it’s still a team made up of amazing people, who have done a great job of building great Formula 1 cars and winning world titles for drivers and constructors, dominating in many ways.”

“I think their ability to do that has been a tremendous success story. And what they’ve invested in that, whether it’s staffing, infrastructure in Milton Keynes, everything they’ve done, it’s proof of that. The commitment they show may not be unparalleled but it’s something. We’ve seen a lot of people leave and come back [en F1]. And them, what they did, with two teams [Red Bull Racing et AlphaTauri, ndlr]…People forget the level of employment that Red Bull brings to F1, it’s really extraordinary.”
