Rain of documentaries on space on Arte

For the Night of the Stars, Arte is offering a special day studded with very good documentaries on space.

The Interstellar Odyssey – On the way to the stars© Prod.

Broadcast on August 12 from 11:35 a.m. on Arte

Saturday 12, while the Perseid meteors will illuminate our skies, the world of astronomy will organize its now traditional Star Night. Arte aligns and programs no less than seven documentaries broadcast throughout the day. With all due respect to those who like to watch shooting stars, the most interesting programs will be broadcast once the sun has set, including The Interstellar Odyssey, a collection of four films already released in 2021. The series imagines the sending, in the next century, of a mission to Minerva B, a hypothetical exoplanet located 4.5 light years away. Within this framework, each episode focuses on the different challenges that humanity will have to meet – development of a technology capable of designing the journey, preparation necessary for the encounter with other forms of life… A way of seeing how research is advancing rapidly, allowing us to push the limits of our knowledge even further.

The two films that close the evening are the only two previously unseen of the lot and pursue the same objective: to take an interest in the human dimension of the conquest of space. The space surveyors are interested in these scientists – astrophysicists, engineers – who we never see and who are nevertheless at the maneuver behind the missions that make the news. The goal here is to immerse themselves in their daily lives and see how much their work fascinates them. Some live moments of pure happiness, like when their rovers, to which they have dedicated a good part of their lives, finally land on Mars. Others are less fortunate, like this engineer who comes to wonder if he brings bad luck as he has worked on projects that have failed. In any case, we see how strong their emotions are. The opportunity also to overcome certain clichés, such as the idea that they would engage in fierce competition between them (which does not correspond to their feelings).

Finally, the last document, In the loneliness of space questions the prospect of a manned mission to Mars and the level of acceptance of the astronauts promised to live for years in the most complete solitude and far from their loved ones. A perspective that is already leading aspiring Martians today to prepare, with the help of psychologists… The success or failure of the project will depend on their mental resistance, and the right to make mistakes simply does not exist!
