The G7 and other governments affirm that they will be together with Ukraine “as long as it takes”
The leaders of the G7 countries, supported by 14 other governments, issued a statement of support for Ukraine reaffirming their “unwavering commitment to the strategic goal of a free, independent, democratic and sovereign Ukraine, within its internationally recognized borders, capable of defend themselves and deter future aggression.
The statement says that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is “a threat to international peace and security, a flagrant violation of international law, including the UN Charter, and incompatible with our security interests.”
“We will stand by Ukraine as it defends itself once morest Russian aggression, for as long as it takes.”
The G7 leaders also say they are starting negotiations with Ukraine to formalize their governments’ “enduring support for Ukraine as it defends its sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
They say these discussions will start immediately and will aim to “ensure a sustainable force capable of defending Ukraine now and deterring Russian aggression in the future.”
This will be achieved through “security assistance and modern military equipment… prioritizing air defense, artillery and long-range fire, armored vehicles and other key capabilities.”
There would also be more training for Ukrainian forces and intelligence sharing, as well as support for strengthening Ukraine’s economic stability and resilience, including through reconstruction and recovery efforts.
Technical support would be provided to help Ukraine towards “the good governance necessary to move towards its Euro-Atlantic aspirations”.
“In the event of a future Russian armed attack, we intend to immediately consult with Ukraine to determine the appropriate next steps,” the G7 states.
The G7 leaders also say they are committed to “holding Russia to account… including through sanctions and export controls, as well as supporting efforts to hold those responsible for war crimes to account.”
“Russia’s sovereign assets in our jurisdictions will remain frozen until Russia pays for the damage it has caused to Ukraine. We recognize the need to establish an international redress mechanism,” they added.
The G7 said that, for its part, Ukraine had agreed to strengthen transparency and anti-corruption measures, as well as advance “defense reforms and modernization, including the strengthening of democratic civilian control of the armed forces.”
