A Venezuelan migrant, identified as Jesús Guzmán-Bermúdez, was charged by New York authorities with allegedly raping a woman at a hotel in Cheektowaga in Erie County, apparently in front of her three-year-old son.
According to the district attorney of said county, John Flynn, the citizen was accused of the alleged commission of the crimes of rape in the first degree; second degree kidnapping; harassment in the second degree and for endangering a minor.
Guzmán-Bermúdez was held without bail and is likely to be sentenced to 25 years in prison if convicted. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the suspect and the victim knew each other.
“It wasn’t like an incident where this individual went out into town, grabbed a victim, and brought them back to the hotel room. That is not the case here. They clearly knew each other,” said Flynn, who also noted that it is only the fourth incident in Erie County that has occurred with migrants arriving there, since the other three that have been seen were related to thefts and petty crimes.
He made it clear that more than 95% of the Venezuelan migrants who pass through that New York county “comply with the laws and behave.”
According to Fox News, the Republicans in the entity reproached this fact and criticized the transfer that is made from New York City to other nearby counties. According to Senator Rob Ortt, what happened is the fault of the failed “Democratic sanctuary” and the “open border” policies of the federal government “that have created chaos” in the United States.
