The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region has 27 of the 71 cases of tick-borne encephalitis recorded in France between May 2021 and May 2023 according to a recent study by Public Health France.

If Haute-Savoie is the department with the most cases of tick-borne encephalitis since 2021, the whole region is considered to be an area of ​​significant circulation of the virus, with massifs particularly at risk, such as the Trièves valley in Isère or the department of Ardèche.

Transmitted to humans by an infected tick, tick-borne encephalitis is an infection that affects the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord in a significant proportion of cases) and 40% of those affected may present neurological sequelae for several years. .

In addition to tick-borne encephalitis, this parasitic mite, which lives in wooded and humid environments but also in green spaces in cities, is also known to transmit a bacterium that causes Lyme disease.

Thus, to avoid tick bites, it is recommended that professionals working in connection with nature, but also walkers, campers or hunters, wear covering clothing and shoes during outdoor activity, put on a hat or cap, stay on the paths and avoid tall grass, do not sit on the ground.

After the activity: carefully inspect his whole body (especially the knees, elbows and groin) and check his pet’s coat. In the event of the appearance of a red plaque or symptoms (fatigue, fever, joint pain, etc.), it is imperative to consult a doctor, as tick-borne encephalitis has been a notifiable disease since May 2021.
