Judge Edgardo Laurencifrom Chamber I of the Orán Trial Court, sentenced Mauricio Fabián Zambrano (28) to 8 years in effective prison, as “the criminally responsible author of the crime of simple homicide with eventual intent” because on April 24, 2022 he was driving drunk and collided with the athlete Irene Virginia Peronja.

The magistrate ordered that Zambrano be transferred to Oran Prison Unit 3, where he will serve his sentence.

On Sunday, April 24 of last year, Virgnia Peronja, who was 28 years old, was running along National Route 50, near the aqueduct between the town of Hipólito Yrigoyen and Orán, when she was hit by the car Zambrano was driving. who was driving in a zigzagging way, at high speed and without taking into account the warning of other drivers who had changed their lights and honked their horn.

After the crash, the young man, who was a gendarme, tried to escape but was stopped by policemen who were driving along the same route and who were precisely trying to get him to stop driving the way he had been doing. The breathalyzer analysis yielded a positive result, with 1.84 grams of alcohol per liter in blood.

These data were highlighted in the plea of prosecutor Claudia Carreras, who asked that Zambrano be sentenced to 11 years in prison. Instead, the defense, in charge of the lawyer Orfeo Maggio, requested that he be acquitted for the benefit of the doubt and, if he was convicted, that he be guilty of manslaughter, with which he would have received a lesser sentence.

In the debate, Zambrano acknowledged that he had in fact ingested alcoholic beverages. In addition, he acknowledged that on the morning of Saturday, April 23, he had consumed marijuana. However, regarding the crash specifically, he tried to hold the victim responsible, stating that she was crossing him and that to try to avoid her he swung several times.

But the testimonies of the policemen who arrested him, and who came in another vehicle behind Zambrano, contradicted him. These police officers said that they saw the car moving zigzag, that they tried to pass it but were unsuccessful, that they honked several times and flashed lights at it, but Zambrano did not pay attention to their warnings and in those circumstances, on the way up the aqueduct they saw a woman running and trying to avoid Zambrano’s car that had gone down the shoulder and had gone back up onto the asphalt. Even the policemen assured that it gave the impression that the car was chasing the young woman, until she collided with it.

Virginia Peronja was a well-known athlete in Oran and her death caused a shock in Oran. As soon as the characteristics of the sinister road in which the young woman lost her life were known, there were expressions of pain and demands that the driver be convicted.
