With a prevalence rate of 11% in the general population, viral hepatitis B, this little-known disease, is becoming more “worrying” than HIV/AIDS, whose prevalence is 0.3%.
This is at least an alert made by Dr Thierno Chérif Sy Médecin to the Kolda health district during a strengthening session for local elected officials on the relaunch of the EPI and vaccination once morest covid, this Wednesday, August 9 in Kolda. Dr. SY is also coordinator of the fight once morest HIV infection and certain communicable diseases including hepatitis B at the level of the said district.
This health executive continues that “it is a very common condition that causes a lot of harm”. And if the diagnosis is not made in time, “the condition can progress slowly and quietly to serious diseases such as cirrhosis and liver cancer”, he added.
However, hepatitis B is one of the diseases that can be prevented from birth by vaccination, said this general practitioner. Hence his call for “scrupulous respect for the vaccination schedule” but also for “delivery in health structures” so that no newborn is left behind.
To promote this conduct enacted by the health authorities, local elected officials are urged to raise awareness in their respective areas of responsibility to achieve a change in behavior.
