It’s a turbulent time for Disney. On the occasion of the publication of its quarterly results, we learned that its Disney Plus streaming platform will deploy a formula with advertisements as well as a price increase for the existing subscription. Update on these upcoming changes.

According to the announcements, Disney+ has lost nearly 12 million subscribers between March and June 2023, rising from 157.8 million to 146.1 million. This significant decline is attributed, among other things, to the loss of cricket rights in India. Faced with this situation, the platform decided to react by significantly increasing its prices. The increase will first be effective in the United States before taking hold in Europe.

Disney Plus prices revised upwards

From next October, US users will see the price of their Disney+ subscription increase. The increase will then continue in Europe from November.

To cope with this increase, Disney + will introduce a new intermediate offer as well as a formula with advertisements. Thus, users will have the choice between:

Disney+ Standard with ads Disney+ Premium (without ads)

These price changes are supposed to compensate for the drop in the number of subscribers and allow the platform to generate more revenue.

The arrival of a formula with advertisements

This discounted offer will allow users who agree to view advertisements while streaming to benefit from a cheaper price than subscription without . The platform thus hopes to attract new subscribers thanks to this less expensive option.

Moreover, Disney has announced that since the arrival of the formula with in the United States, this is the one that new subscribers prefer.

The end of account sharing

In parallel with these price changes, Disney+ has also announced that it wants to end the sharing of accounts between several users who are not from the same household. Disney CEO Bob Iger told shareholders that the streaming service will follow Netflix on this point. Until now, it was possible for several people to take advantage of a single profile, but this will change soon.

Finally, it should be noted that this announcement comes as Disney Plus is removing more and more films and series from its catalog. Will subscribers stay?
