A call for theft in a shop on one of London’s main shopping streets, massively relayed on TikTok, gave rise to tensions between young people and police and led to nine arrests, prompting the Minister of the Interior to demand sanctions on Thursday severe.

Hundreds of people gathered outside the JD Sports store on Oxford Street, Europe’s busiest shopping street, on Wednesday in response to posts on Snapchat and TikTok urging users to take part in the “shoplifting of JD at Oxford Circus” from mid-followingnoon.

Several stores had temporarily barricaded themselves with their customers inside and clashes took place with the police, who announced on Wednesday evening that they had arrested nine people and issued around thirty dispersal orders.

“We cannot accept that the kind of anarchy that we see in certain American cities settles in the streets of the United Kingdom”, reacted Thursday on X, ex-Twitter, the British Minister of the Interior Suella Braverman, sharing a video showing police wielding batons. “Those responsible must be hunted down and imprisoned,” she added.

The police had warned Wednesday that they would be massively present in the neighborhood following “online speculation” regarding the possibility of committing crimes.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan had urged Londoners not to participate in the “nonsense” circulating on TikTok.
