Bad news for ski stars like Marco Odermatt, Alexis Pinturault or Dominik Paris. Fis wants to ban the helmet design of various athletes, such as the «Blick» reported. Specifically, the white and blue headgear designed by energy drink manufacturer Red Bull is a thorn in the side of the international ski association. According to Fis, the size of a helmet sponsor’s logo must not exceed 50 square centimeters.
At Swiss-Ski they are resisting the decision. “Nowhere in the regulations is there a clear prohibition that a helmet may not be equipped with the colors of a sponsor,” says Swiss Ski Co-Director Diego Züger to “Blick”. It is extremely important that global brands like Red Bull invest in skiing, restrictions in helmet design might even lead to the loss of a sponsor. “That would have devastating consequences for our athletes, considering that the ski stars get a large part of their income from the individual sponsor,” said Züger.
Goggia drives with a different Red Bull helmet
In the event of non-compliance with the regulations, Fis threatens a fine and a warning. In the event of a recurrence, even disqualifications would be conceivable. In addition to Odermatt, Pinturault and Paris, there are also numerous other athletes with Red Bull helmets in the alpine ski circus – such as Alex Vinatzer, Alice Robinson or Clément Noël. The Swiss ski crosser Fanny Smith is also out and regarding with the white and blue head protection.
Downhill dominator Sofia Goggia shows what the helmets of the Red Bull athletes might look like in the future. The Italian is also wearing a logo of the Austrian company, but this is much more subtle and should correspond to the Fis standards.
