It’s just a goodbye, for young Emma Lana and her family. This Wednesday, the young student from Crisnée flew to the United States, as part of the Expedis program of the WEP (World education program). The latter set up by the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, allowing secondary school students to leave to learn a language. And for the student at Saint-Louis College in Waremme, it is English that will be the target since she is leaving for the city of Austin, Texas. This is for a period of one school semester, i.e. five months.
And it is not without fear that the young Crisnéenne leaves her bearings. “I’m afraid of not being able to fit in and not making friendsshe says. I have the basics in English but it is true that it is not so easy to speak it. I’m also afraid that I miss my family too much.” And it is in a host family, precisely, that the young Crisnéenne will reside. But not before Saturday since she will take part in a city trip to New York with a few other young people.
There are quite normal fears, but the young 16-year-old also leaves with 50 stars in her eyes. “First of all, I’m looking forward to being able to progress in English. I’m also looking forward to discovering the American school system, which is very different from ours. Discovering the culture and seeing how people live in this part of the world makes me happy. too! I would also like to discover the landscapes.”
And the courses that will be given to him at the “States” from August 16, at the Vandegrift high school, do not scare him. “Honestly, in Belgium, things are going well at school. So I’m not too worried regarding that.”
On the other hand, for the mother, Antonina Cannella, letting her offspring go was not easy. “We had a hard time this morning, she said, at the time of goodbye. There, we are waiting for one thing, that is for her to call us when she arrives”vers 19 h.
620 Belgian students
This summer, a total of 620 young Belgian students will go abroad, the vast majority to improve their English. “The goal is to allow them to experience a school immersion abroad, which will be taken into account as part of their school curriculum”informs the WEP through its communications manager, Adrien Buntix.
