More beds by using the cellar lanes, investing in cycle tourism, developing new events

St.Pölten (OTS) A press conference on the subject of “Weinviertel Wine Experience” took place today, Wednesday, at the traditional Hindler winery in Schrattenthal. Also on the podium: Provincial Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner, Managing Director of Lower Austria archyde news Michael Showers and Managing Director of Weinviertel Tourismus GmbH Hannes Steinacker. The state governor presented three new measures as part of a “master plan for wine tourism” to further expand wine tourism in the Weinviertel.

“Wine and tourism are an unbeatable team in Lower Austria,” said Mikl-Leitner with conviction. In the future, the focus should therefore be even more on the wine, because especially for the Weinviertel, the wine, in addition to the wonderful landscape and the cycle paths, is “a unique selling point” and “we can also be proud of that in Lower Austria,” said the Governor and further: “Lower Austria has the most wine-growing area in Austria and also the most cellar lanes. Every fifth guest comes to us in Lower Austria because of the excellent wines.”

In order to further strengthen wine tourism in Lower Austria, three measures have been developed, said Mikl-Leitner. First of all, they want to create more beds with a wine cover and, above all, use the cellar lanes even more. The special form of dedication “Bauland special area wine tourism”, which has existed in Lower Austria since 2020, also helps here. In this way, press houses or cellars that were no longer used might be given a new purpose. There are already six flagship projects, including the Hindler winery.

As a second measure, they want to further expand cycle tourism, announced the governor. The Weinviertel alone already has more than 3,000 kilometers of cycle routes, with the “Iron Curtain Trail” and the “Eurovelo 9” being particularly noteworthy. A special success story is also the cycle bridge between Marchegg and western Slovakia, said Mikl-Leitner. Now on the agenda according to the state governor: the uniform signposting of the wine cycle routes in the Weinviertel, the further expansion of the rest areas and the creation of two artistically designed rest areas on the “Iron Curtain Trail”.

The third measure will be the development of new wine tourism events, Mikl-Leitner continued. The important thing here is the Weinherbst as the largest wine tourism initiative in Europe. For example, the “Sunset Tasting Weinviertel” is new, a new event format in which the guests hike through the vineyards with the winegrowers at sunset. “The Weinviertel still has a lot of potential that we want to use. We are already writing a success story and this success story should become an even better and longer one,” emphasized the governor.

“The special thing regarding a vacation in Lower Austria is the combination of the many strengths that we have,” said the managing director of Lower Austria archyde news, Michael Showerer, in his statement, referring to culinary, wine, cultural and natural experiences in Lower Austria . A special series of events is also the successful format “Culture among the winegrowers”; there are a total of 36 events this year, 20 have already taken place and 16 are still on the program. Showers also referred to the “discovery tours through Lower Austria” on topics such as cycling, hiking or culture. With a view to the Weinviertel, he also pointed out that the “Iron Curtain Trail” has been designated a “cultural route of Europe”.

In his remarks, the managing director of Weinviertel Tourismus, Hannes Steinacker, presented examples of success such as the wine apartments Kellerstöckl of the Hindler winery, the vineyard suite of the Rain winery or hotels for wine lovers such as the Althof Retz. “We will see many more examples of overnight stays in the Kellergasse in the future,” he said with conviction.
