(Motorsport-Total.com) – “It’s just little things that have to be cleaned up in the contracts,” explains Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff when he (once once more) entered the Formula 1 race in Spa Lewis Hamilton’s expiring contract is addressed.
Toto Wolff wants to celebrate further successes with Lewis Hamilton
The record champion’s current contract ends following the 2023 season and although both sides want to extend the contract, this has still not officially happened before the summer break. Wolff emphasizes that he understands that this may raise questions.
At the same time, he also makes it clear that the points that are still open are not regarding things like possible career options for Hamilton at Mercedes following his active career. “No, we’re not talking regarding an ambassador role following his resignation,” said Wolff.
“That’s not part of the contract negotiations either. I think he still has many years ahead of him as a driver in this team, and that’s why it’s just a matter of cleaning things up in the contract,” emphasizes Wolff, for whom the extension is just a question the time is.
“I don’t want to give a date because it’s lawyers who talk to lawyers,” explains the team boss, but makes it clear: “It’s not material things anymore, but you have to give it time and I don’t want to commit myself to a date establish.”
However, he has no doubts that there will be a new contract. “I think he was [in seiner Motorsportkarriere] been a Mercedes driver since he was eight or ten years old,” recalls Wolff, referring to Hamilton’s loyalty.

Hamilton made his Formula 1 debut later in 2007 for McLaren and thus also “in the Mercedes family”, according to Wolff, since 2013 he has been driving for the works team. And nothing should change regarding that. “He is a synonym for Mercedes,” emphasizes Wolff.
“We experienced so many ups and downs, so many difficult situations on a personal and professional level, and so many extremely positive moments. And I think that welded us together,” explains the Austrian.
There is mutual trust between Hamilton and him or Mercedes and “such a strong bond that makes him so loyal and us too,” says Wolff, who is certain that the partnership will continue beyond 2024.
The only question is when this can be officially announced.
