iPhones May Not Adopt Removable Batteries Despite Recent EU Regulations

According to an EU regulation, companies like Apple are required to design devices with batteries ” easily replaceable“. However, John Ternus, executive vice president of hardware engineering at Apple, indicates in an interview that this change may not be implemented by the company because it may affect internal robustness machines, which would decrease their longevity.

If EU regulations are enforced rigidly, Apple may consider pulling out of some markets

In an interview on the YouTube channel ORBITJohn Ternus discusses the possibility of equipping future iPhones with removable batteries. Although the interview focused primarily on Apple’s green initiatives led by Lisa Jackson, Ternus points out that it should consider a safer method to allow consumers to replace the batteries of their devices.

In sum, the vice president suggests that iPhone users might be at risk by replacing the battery themselves. Although this concern may be seen as attention to user safety, it is also plausible that this is a strategy to maintain a source of revenue for Apple.

Despite the huge volume of iPhone sales each year, Apple generates a sizable portion of its revenue from battery replacements, with a price fixed at 119 € for iPhone 14 battery replacement for non-AppleCare+ customers. Ternus argues that by making an internal component more easily repairable, it might create a potential weak point, which would have the effect of decrease the durability of the device.

He adds that making it easier to replace the batteries might make it harder to get waterproof and dustproof seals on iPhones. Ternus also highlights Apple’s commitment to product durability, highlighting the consistent resale value of iPhones over time thanks to their increased durability.

Ultimately, while Apple aims to deliver a top-notch experience to its customers when buying their first iPhone, the company’s main goal is to make a profit. Therefore, if EU rules leave no room for maneuver, Apple might prefer to leave the markets of the European Union rather than change the design of its products. Even if Ternus did not explicitly confirm it during the interview, the idea remains implied.

However, it should be noted that even though Apple does not offer an easy solution for battery replacement, this does not mean that the future iPhone 15 line will be difficult to disassemble, since it is supposed to be designed to be easily repaired.
