Kiev: Seven people were killed in a Russian missile attack in the eastern Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk, officials said. Two missiles hit. Police personnel and rescue workers were also injured. Officials informed that the rescue operation is continuing. Ukraine has not yet responded to the attack.

Pokrovsk, with a population of regarding 60,000, was located 40 kilometers (25 mi) from the eastern front.

The two missiles were launched 40 minutes apart. Residential buildings, a hotel, cafes, shops and administrative buildings were damaged yesterday, said Pavlo Kirilenko, the head of the Donetsk region’s military administration.

Meanwhile, Kylenko said 81 people, including two children, were injured in the missile attack. Ukraine’s Interior Minister Igor Klymenko said the dead included a top official in the Donetsk region.

After the first attack, the debris was being removed from the site. But Klymenko said the threat of repeated shelling forced rescuers to suspend work at night.

At the same time, the Russian Defense Ministry said that the attack was carried out in a place where Ukrainian troops were staying.

Russia blames Ukraine

Russia has blamed Ukraine for arson attacks on military recruitment centers. Callers in Ukraine have accused elderly Russians of committing similar crimes by duping them.

The prosecutor general’s office says Ukrainian agents posed as police or creditors in the calls and urged Russians to attack the centers in exchange for promises to settle debts.
