Yesterday, the Ministry of Social Development and the Family, represented by the Family Development Department, in cooperation with the Family Consultation Center (WIFAQ), held a virtual symposium entitled (Breastfeeding and its impact on the health of the mother and child).
Dr. Ayesh Al-Qahtani, family counselor and psychological counselor, and Dr. Amani Khaled, a clinical psychologist at a specialized center for counseling and research, and Dr. Rana Muhammad Batrani, a psychologist at the Family Counseling Center (WIFAQ), and Ms. Rawan Ghanem Hassanein, a breastfeeding and newborn care specialist, a social media influencer.
This symposium comes on the occasion of the World Breastfeeding Week, which is held in August every year. The theme for World Breastfeeding Week 2023 was entitled (Let’s make breastfeeding and work possible).
This symposium aims to discuss the importance of breastfeeding from the medical, legal, psychological and social points of view. In addition to educating mothers regarding breastfeeding and its impact on the health of the mother and child.
The symposium was initiated by Ms. Rawan Ghanem Hassanein, a specialist in breastfeeding and neonatal care, an influencer in the field of social communication, who spoke regarding the medical theme and the impact of breastfeeding on the physical health of the mother and child.
She explained that breastfeeding is one of the most effective ways to ensure better health for the child and the mother. Labor laws also provide for maternity leave and breastfeeding hours to help working mothers continue to breastfeed following returning to work.
She also emphasized that breastfeeding has many benefits, including for the mother, as it is a means of preventing breast cancer, which affects one out of every eight women; Because the breastfeeding hormone “prolactin” reduces the estrogen hormone, which is a major cause of breast cancer, pointing out that natural milk is an acidic medium that prevents random cell division and is considered an unsuitable environment for the growth of cancer cells in the mother’s breast, in addition to containing natural milk “HAMLET” substances that It kills (40) types of different cancers, not just breast cancer.
While Dr. Ayesh Al-Qahtani dealt with the legal axis and the wisdom of breastfeeding and weaning following two years, the benefits of breastfeeding for the child and the mother, and the scientific miracles in them.
The doctor explained that recent medical research has proven the relationship between full breastfeeding and the efficiency of the immune system and the ability to resist diseases, and that the efficiency of the immune system does not become optimal except when the child completes two years of breastfeeding, but before that, the infant needs acquired immunity in the form of bodies. Antibiotics passed from mother’s milk to the child through breastfeeding.
On the psychological side, Dr. Amani Khaled stated that the child finds in breastfeeding a continuation of his biological and psychological survival, and this habit is strongly supported by him, with which it is rare for any other habit he learned in his life to receive such support, and the reinforcement derives its strength not only from repeating this habit many times every day Nor from the satisfaction he gets from every feeding, but from the successive confirmation of his feeling of security, acceptance and confidence in his external environment and the constant verification of the correctness of his expectations and his total dependence on them.
Dr. Rana Batroni, a psychologist at the Family Consultation Center (Wifaq), touched on the social axis and the social impact of breastfeeding on the mother and the child, as she explained that breastfeeding confirms many symbolic meanings for the child, and a number of rituals and beliefs are formed around it, including that genetic characteristics are incomplete when The child following birth, and through the mother’s milk, some of the mother’s genetic characteristics can be transmitted to the child, because the transfer of genetic characteristics is not only through blood, but also through milk.
