A recent study revealed a new benefit of vitamin D linked to a protein whose high affects a number of aspects of life, on top of which is obesity, smoking, lack of physical activity, and seriously impaired functions of some organs.
Gerontologists from Trinity College Dublin and the University of Limerick have shown associations between vitamin D levels and CRP (an indicator of inflammation in the elderly). CRP can be a measure of inflammation in the body, and very high levels can indicate an infection, while CRP can be a measure of inflammation in the body. Slightly elevated levels might indicate low-grade inflammation.
Vitamin D has recently been linked to immune function, and previous research from the Irish Longitudinal Study of Aging showed that 1 in 8 Irish seniors deficient in vitamin D are most at risk including smokers and those with obesity, physical inactivity, and chronic conditions. , impaired renal function, and diabetes. In this study, participants over the age of 50 were examined, where it was found that vitamin D deficiency was associated with the presence of inflammatory protein, and that getting an adequate amount of vitamin D reduces the risk of an elevated level of inflammatory protein (CRP).
These observations also provide reassurance to nutritionists that increasing vitamin D levels can have health benefits and are not associated with adverse inflammatory outcomes, according to a previously published study.
Dr Eamon Laird, lead author of the study, said: “This study is very important given the high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and chronic disease in older people living in Ireland. Vitamin D to higher levels of deficiency might help tap the inflammatory pathway in the elderly.” Laird added: Vitamin D is a beneficial component for having a lower risk of infection, and interest in vitamin D comes along with regular physical activity, a healthy lifestyle, adequate sleep, and social interactions.
