PGA plans for 2024: More money and a season on a yearly basis

More prize money, more exclusivity: The PGA tour of professional golfers has presented its game plan including innovations for 2024. The regular FedExCup season is now played in a calendar year rhythm. The regular season runs from January to August and consists of 36 tournaments plus three play-off events. There will be eight signature tournaments with a limited field of participants, some of which will be held without a cut. The play-off champion receives a record bonus of $25 million.

“We’re excited regarding the launch of the PGA Tour’s revamped schedule and what the season will offer our fans: a January start with stars competing more frequently, weekly drama and the emergence of new stars,” said Tour Director Commissioner Jay Monahan. The season begins with The Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii and the Wyndham Championship in North Carolina. There is only a break at the end of July/beginning of August due to the Olympic golf tournament in Paris.

In between, the four major and eight so-called signature tournaments take place. Three of those eight events are invitational tournaments – the Genesis Invitational, the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Memorial – with a cut and a higher prize pool of at least $4 million for the winner. The remaining five – including The Sentry and Traveler Championship – are without a cut following two rounds. The field will only be around 80 entrants at a time, with the top 50 seeded in last season’s FedExCup rankings.

As before, 70 players qualify for the play-offs. Austria’s top golfer Sepp Straka, who tees off on Thursday at the $20 million St. Jude Championship in Memphis, did that once more this year. Only 30 athletes continue to tee off at the tour finals at East Lake in Atlanta. Plans for the 2024 fall season are still pending.

It is clearly visible that the PGA copied a lot from the LIV tour financed by Saudi Arabia. The two series, together with the DP World Tour, announced a basic agreement on a cooperation in June. It is still unclear exactly what this will look like.
