Today, some projects take volunteers to developing countries, but Belgium also welcomes participants. “We have more or less 13 projects this year and each project welcomes between 5 and 10 people. Every year, we welcome 100 to 150 volunteers in Belgium, most of whom come from Europe but also from Vietnam or Mexico. They are housed by the associations. Often it is rather simple conditions because they are welcomed in schools or farms.” It is also possible to be Belgian and stay in the country, through the coordination of local projects.
Two of these projects have just started in the province of Liège. Near Huy, in a center for disabled people where a small group of volunteers carry out animation projects, activities with people who live in the centers and in Liège for a project entitled “La Cité s’invente”. Other projects deal with improving the outdoor spaces of a school. “We try to have partnerships with associations that offer cultural projects, social projects, environmental projects. That way, there are a variety of contexts for volunteers to immerse themselves in, says Sabina Jaworek.
The first idea, on the other hand, is the encounter. The people who will participate in these projects will work with the association. It’s very useful. But the idea is also to take the time to meet, to spend time together, to discuss and learn things also on the places that welcome them.“
