Only 7.4% of people who have tried to quit smoking remain abstinent for more than a year. In order to improve the effectiveness of smoking cessation interventions, ComPaRe, the AP-HP patient community for research, interviewed 793 people followed and 795 doctors to identify the most important markers to take into account. to personalize smoking cessation interventions. This studycoordinated by Dr Alexandre Malmartel of Université Paris Cité, was the subject of a publication in the journal Journal of Clinical Epidemiology (June 2023), indicates a press release from the AP-HP. Smoking cessation is a major public health issue. Tobacco causes 75,000 deaths a year. If more than two thirds of smokers are interested in the idea of quitting smoking, only 7.4% of those who have attempted smoking cessation have remained abstinent for more than a year. year. To increase the effectiveness of smoking cessation interventions, the research team sought to identify the best way to personalize them and the criteria to be taken into account during this personalization. For this, the researchers have identified all 36 markers that can influence the effectiveness of a smoking cessation intervention in the scientific literature. These markers were, for example, the patient’s psychosocial situation, their smoking habits, or their financial resources. The researchers then interviewed 793 people from the ComPaRe cohort and 795 doctors to prioritize the markers to be taken into account when implementing a smoking cessation intervention. For doctors, the three most important markers were: patients’ motivation, their preferences and their fears (for example, fear of gaining weight). For the people followed, the three important markers were the motivation to quit smoking, the habits of consumption (at home/work) and the level of dependence. These results will make it possible to build personalized smoking cessation interventions taking into account both the priorities of people and their doctors. Indeed, these interventions are often designed by caregivers, without taking into account the perspective of the patients, explains the press release from the AP-HP.
