Ukraine’s Deputy Defense Minister Hannah Maliar said Russian forces have used nearly half a million ammunition in the past week alone on the Eastern Front, a week she described as “extremely difficult and tense.”

Maliar said on YouTube that there were “endless attacks” by the Russians, with more than 9,000 bombings, compared to 8,000 the previous week.

“This is a continuous artillery barrage, through which our soldiers have to pass. The enemy spent almost half a million ammunition in the east last week.”

She said the enemy continued to process attacks in various areas of the Donetsk and Luhansk fronts, describing the east as the epicenter of hostilities.

Maliar said that the Kupyansk direction was “probably the hottest. The enemy was trying to recapture the positions lost last fall. They have such a plan: they want to return the territories they lost in the Kharkiv region.”

But he said repeated Russian efforts to break through the Ukrainian defenses were unsuccessful.

There was also heavy fighting in the wooded areas east of Lyman, with the Russians “desperately trying to surround Avdiivka, but failing. They don’t risk going there because they don’t want to get involved in street fights with our soldiers and they don’t want to lose there. But they can’t advance”.

Maliar said that in the south the “situation was quite difficult last week; our Armed Forces faced each other there in the main offensive directions – Melitopol and Berdiansk – not only with continuous mining, the enemy is mining positions in three layers and is not only mining positions, but also all possible directions of movement”.

He said that in addition, “the enemy is strengthening and concretizing key commanding heights for them. And now our troops are faced with such complications and engineering fortifications. Therefore, of course, all this slows down the advance.”

The commander of the Ukrainian forces in the south, Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, said Sunday night that Russian forces attacked Ukrainian positions 21 times and carried out 608 shelling raids over the past day.

He said that the Ukrainian artillery had carried out 1,344 firing missions in the same period and destroyed 21 units of enemy military equipment.

Several Ukrainian units have released videos of the ongoing fighting around Bakhmut, showing attacks on enemy positions over the past week. There have been no territorial gains for the Ukrainians, but they have made incremental progress south of Bakhmut.
