Slovenia Appeals to NATO for Assistance Amid Devastating Floods

Ljubljana – Slovenia asked NATO for help following the floods worsened. Slovenia’s request is for 200 troops from the defense alliance. The help of soldiers has been sought for protection, rescue and assistance work in the flood area. The country also asked for five heavy military helicopters capable of lifting five tons.

Prime Minister Robert Golob described the incident as the country’s worst natural disaster in the last 30 years. Apart from this, three people died in Slovenia following being caught in the storm. Slovenia also sought help through the European Union Civil Protection. The country has sought technical assistance and services of engineers. The Slovenian town of Kamnik is heavily damaged by floods.

“The total damage is more than 500 million euros. “The bridge in Dolsko, near the capital Ljubljana, was torn in two by the flood. Road and energy infrastructure in two-thirds of the country and hundreds of residential buildings were particularly affected,” the prime minister said.

Rivers and water bodies in the country are overflowing due to heavy rains since Friday. Floods and landslides caused huge damage. Meanwhile, the threat of landslides also remains in neighboring Austria.
