When announcing his move to Manchester United, Rasmus Hojlund said “it’s no secret” that he has been a fan of the club since a young age.

It’s safe to say the young Dane is living his dream – and that of millions around the world – by joining the Reds. This is the third signing of the summer for Erik ten Hag, from Atalanta.

Hojlund was featured on the pitch at Old Trafford ahead of our friendly win over RC Lens, and while that moment marked the start of the final chapter of his United journey, we wanted to know where his story as a fan of the club lies. had begun.

Our interview with Rasmus is now available in full below…

Rasmus Hojlund: The Story So Far

When asked regarding his earliest memories as a United supporter, Hojlund replies:

“Yes, probably, we saw one of the pictures today [d’un enfant portant le maillot de United]. I think that’s one of my earliest memories.”

“I think one of the earliest memories I have watching a game is probably watching United win the Champions League [en 2008], during the penalty shootout once morest Chelsea. The penalty shootout once morest Chelsea.”

As he explains, Hojlund’s love for United runs through the family, with his father being the main source of his initial affection for his new club.

His first United hero comes as no surprise either, as he set his sights on the club in the 2008 Champions League final victory in Moscow.

“My dad tipped me off and I started following everyone around the club and of course I was very interested in Premier League football and everything to do with it. ”

, he adds. “So I kept watching and, of course, Cristiano [Ronaldo] was my idol when he was playing at the time, so I continued to follow him and of course I continued to follow Manchester United.

When asked if he admires Ronaldo for his qualities as a player or for his mentality, Rasmus continued: “I think it’s both. Certainly for his mentality. He had a difficult childhood, he got through it, he wanted to be the best. He even realized it very early on.”

“I believe there’s an interview with Anderson, Ferdinand and Ronaldo where the journalist asks, ‘Who is the best football player in the world’ and he just said ‘me’. I like this mentality. He just spoke up and said he wanted to at least be the best, and that’s the same mentality I have. I want to be the best version of myself.”

Seeing United and Ronaldo in the 2008 Champions League final had a big impact on Rasmus.

Rasmus has been a Red ever since and is now coming full circle from fan to United player, an experience he describes as surreal.

Despite this, the 20-year-old isn’t being intimidated by his new teammates and is simply focusing on working with the guys he now shares the dressing room with.

“It’s a bit surreal, there are a lot of stars, but yes, I’m part of this team now. I recognize that they are only human and I can’t wait to play on the field with the other guys.
