Montreal Canadiens Trade Hoffman and Pitlick to Pittsburgh Penguins: Acquiring Petry, DeSmith, Légaré, and More

Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes announced on Sunday that he has traded forwards Mike Hoffman and Rem Pitlick to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for defenseman Jeff Petry, goaltender Casey DeSmith, forward Nathan Légaré and a pick. second round in 2025.

The Penguins are also withholding 25% of Jeff Petry’s salary.

Pittsburgh thus had the room to acquire defenseman Erik Karlsson from the San Jose Sharks in the same three-team trade.

The 35-year-old Petry had 31 points, including five goals, in 61 games for the Penguins last season. In 14 NHL seasons, the 6’3″, 201 lb right-hander scored 353 points (92 goals and 261 assists) in 864 season games with the Penguins, Canadiens and Edmonton Oilers.

He has 13 points, including five goals in 48 playoff games. A native of Ann Arbor, Mich., Petry has enjoyed success with the Habs, including four consecutive seasons of more than 40 points, a team-high among defensemen in each of those seasons.

Casey DeSmith

A native of Rochester, NH, Casey DeSmith went 15-16-4 in 38 games with the Penguins last season, posting a 3.17 goals- once morest-average and .905 save percentage. The 31-year-old goaltender has won 58 games and nine shutouts in 134 NHL games.

Nathan Legare

Montreal native Nathan Légaré played 68 games with the Wilkes-Barre Penguins of the American League in 2022-23, scoring eight goals and 11 assists. The 6’0, 200 lbs forward, 22, was selected in the third round (74th overall) by the Penguins in 2019.
