“Suddenly I was lying there and following that it was difficult to put pressure on the pedal, especially because of the broken cleat,” explained the Dutchman at the post-race press conference.
What was even more important was that the gears on his bike, on the right side of which he had fallen, had survived the situation unscathed, as his lead at the time of the incident was only around half a minute. “I was lucky that my bike wasn’t broken and I might just keep going,” admitted van der Poel.
