In a video published this Sunday by the French football federation, the Martiniquaise Wendie Renard looks back on her childhood dream of playing in the World Cup, her goal once morest Brazil or her role as a manager with the Bleues.
As Les Bleues prepare to face Morocco in the round of 16 on Tuesday, August 8, the French football federation intends to give the best possible image of the team by publishing videos of interviews and behind the scenes on its YouTube channel. The latest is that of the captain, Wendie Renard.
From this first round, she remembers in particular the meeting once morest Brazil, a “reference game“, notably “in the individual and collective state of mind“. Individual because the Martiniquaise was able to deliver the team by scoring France’s second goal with a header from a corner in the 83rd minute (final score 2-1).
Collective because she gets there thanks to Vicki Becho who fights “to get that corner“, and to the precise strike of Selma Bacha who takes the free kick.”Everyone actually foughtassures Wendie Renard. I managed to score, but it’s a collective victory.”
The captain also managed this goal with a header, visible in the tweet below, because she and Selma Bacha play for the same OL club and know each other well, “even outside“. “I know his hitting qualityinsists the Martiniquaise. I usually know where it happens in the area. Then we have signs between us.”
If Selma Bacha participates in her first World Cup with Les Bleues, Wendie Renard is in her fourth participation (2011, 2015, 2019, 2023), when she would not have “never thought of making one“. “When I was little, I necessarily had this dream of being able to wear this jersey of the France team,to be able to do major competitions and in particular the World Cup because I dreamed through my TV in Martinique, watching the French team play“, she recalls.
Now 33 years old and captain, she fully assumes her role and her responsibilities as a manager, in particular to speak and intervene in front of the other players. “From my experience, it is important because we still have a group which for the most part is (sic) their first World Cupshe analyzes. Afterwards, it’s natural, I don’t actually force it, if necessary it comes, and there are times when you don’t need to talk.”
“I remember from a very young age, when I arrived here in the France team, I always observed how the old ones didshe says. I’m also someone who watches football documentaries a lot, etc. So we try to soak up a bit of everything we can to improve.”
To improve, Wendie Renard still has this goal in mind during this 2023 World Cup: “Il you have to keep your feet firmly on the ground, because nothing is easy and we see it every day. ” Countries like Canada, Olympic champion, Brazil and especially the ultra-favorite United States were indeed eliminated from the group stages.
“It might be us tomorrow if we don’t put the necessary ingredients, warns the captain. So that’s why you have to stay on the alert all the time, all the time and there’s a new competition starting.”
A match to follow commented by Alex Léveillé and Oriane Jean-François, Guyanese player of PSG, on the antennas of the 1st, from 1 p.m. this Tuesday August 8.
