Geneviève de Fontenay: A Private Farewell | Remembering the Lady in the Hat

2023-08-07 11:50:00

The Misses will not say goodbye to Geneviève de Fontenay. The lady in the hat, who died in early August at the age of 90, will be buried in the strictest privacy, only with members of her family, according to her wishes, her former assistant, Hubert Guérin, told the Belgian magazine Cinema-TV-Review.

No religious ceremony is planned, the former Miss Elegance 1957 will simply be buried in the cemetery of Ivry-sur-Seine where her husband and one of her sons are already buried. There will only be “his son, his granddaughters and his brothers and sisters”, assured his former collaborator to the Belgian media. The date has not been made public.

“She said it would be the ball of the hypocrites”

This discretion was a “choice of his son Xavier, in agreement with Geneviève de Fontenay”, who did not want “a Johnny Hallyday-style funeral. She wanted to go alone,” he continued.

It would also seem that the tensions with former Misses might have left some traces. The lady in the hat had, for example, a tumultuous relationship with Sylvie Tellier, who had succeeded her at the head of the Miss France committee, and had been cold for several years with Nathalie Marquay.

The two however had a word with regard to Geneviève de Fontenay the day of her death. “I do not think she was expecting the tributes of Nathalie Marquay or Sylvie Tellier”, reacted in particular, on this subject, Hubert Guérin. “That’s also why she didn’t want a ceremony. She said that it would be the ball of the hypocrites, that she would not see anything anyway and that she would not be there to answer them, ”he told Ciné-Télé-Revue.
