The conversation with Iosu Martín Izcue from Pamplona might have occurred during your stay in California. Or in Belgium. Or in Bulgaria. Or also in France, Gambia, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Malta, Mauritania, Morocco, Portugal, Senegal, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Sahara, Mexico, Brazil… places where he has lived in the last five years, although most a few weeks because, he admitsit does not last more than three months in the same place.

So, although it may seem unusual that I’ve been in New York for almost a year. and that the idea of staying someone else is taking shape in his mind, when listening to him tell why, everything fits. And in the motif it beats strongly that what he is doing there has discovered another Iosu for him.

To know what it is regarding, you have to go back five years, to the last year of your degree, Social Work. He and a friend planned to spend Christmas in Africa. “And now in Africa, why not travel to California”, he remembers from that beginning, in which, to support himself, he worked in the fields. “That idea of being a traveler and adventurer began in my head and of working where he was to be able to continue traveling.” This led him to chain destinations, among which Iceland broke the unwritten rule of three months. “I went for two weeks, but I loved it so much that I stayed for five months.” He helped that they paid him “very well for cleaning rooms in small rural hotels”, which he combined with collecting sheep in the bush, “running, walkie-talkie in hand”. “For me, it was the perfect job: get paid to run down the hillwith those idyllic views and connecting with something very instinctive, like a hunter, to be looking for something”. Giving this job the qualification of perfect is important because he has tried quite a few, including those that are not salaried – “I like to work not just for money, but for the product or to have a room. Or work without asking for anything in return. Giving just because seems very powerful to me”-: he has been a seasonal worker, Pastry chef, waiter, skating and crafts teacher, clown, magic show on birthdays…

And also an alpine and cross-country ski teacher, in the White Week last season in Isaba. There arose the spark for which he is in the United States today, and not because of the snow, but because of the dances that “from the enjoyment” they organized with the children in the followingnoon. “I loved those moments and I realized that I was very happy, that I might spend hours and hours dancing inside that room. ‘I have to learn to dance’, I said to myself, and I began to search”. She did not get the closest option, in Pamplona, because with “a level of bar dance and chufla”, she laughs, she did not pass the entrance exam to the school to which she applied.

But he was not frustrated, and he expanded the search to any part of the world. When he checked that in New York, in a Broadway schoolwas admitted without an entrance test, his adventurous spirit, for which he lets life surprise him, guided him there, for three months.

In that time he knew “all the styles of the world”, hip hop, contemporary, ballet, theater, popping, vogue, salsa, tap, jazz funk… But since he had started from scratch, the three months only allowed him to learn a little basics. “I mightn’t leave like this and I decided to extend my stay for another nine months.” At this point, he reflects on “those inner voices” that can lead a person to think that the projects he has in mind will cost him so much. it’s not worth starting. This is not his case: he is positive and forward-thinking and thinks that things can be achieved, “but you have to look for them”. Like him with extending his learning more months.

Today he is aware that he liked to dance since he was little, but until now he has not been able to express himself as he wanted, “because of what they will say”. She utters the words of a teacher: everything goes beyond the steps. “The insecurities”follow Iosu, “They are the biggest fear to be happy. My goal is not so much to be a dancer for a singer, which I would love, but the process that I am experiencing with the dance”. Because dancing, she adds, even takes away her hunger. Because he arrives tired to a ballet class and at the end he is no longer tired. LThe dance has discovered another Iosu. “My life has changed,” he confesses, and says that with ballet and contemporary he feels more like himself. “They are from Iosu inside. I dance them for myself”.

She maintains that she has to keep learning because dancing “requires a lot of resources, flexibility, musicality, rhythm, knowledge of performance, technique…, being very complete”. And for this reason, following a couple of months of vacation, he already has return ticket to new york. For September 11.
