The Carolina Panthers agreed to four-time Pro Bowl linebacker Justin Houston on a one-year deal Sunday.

Houston, a 12-year NFL veteran, gives the Panthers a specialist quarterback rusher they were looking to play on the opposite side of Brian Burns. Houston has 111 1/2 sacks in his career, including 9 1/2 last season with the Baltimore Ravens.

Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer had previously said that the Carolina team was looking for an edge rusher for the team’s new 3-4 defensive scheme to help take some of the pressure off Burns, a Pro Bowl selection last season. last campaign.

Houston’s best season was in 2014 when he was selected as an All-Pro player, finishing with 22 sacks while a member of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Houston, 34, was a third-round pick of the Chiefs in 2011 and spent eight seasons in Kansas City. He played two years in Indianapolis before spending two years with the Ravens.

The Panthers went 7-10 last season and haven’t made the playoffs in five years.
