While the SNCF has offered a more economical formula on the Paris-Nantes and Paris-Lyon lines since 2022, the railway company will launch similar services to Bordeaux, Rennes and Brussels by the end of 2024. Problem, even the passengers of these trains ” slow” are not all convinced.
Traveling more slowly by train to pay less: this is a formula offered by the SNCF since 2022 on the Paris-Nantes and Paris-Lyon lines. The concept includes slow trains with 720 seats per trip, without first class and with a service reduced to the strict minimum. The rail company will launch similar services to Bordeaux, Rennes and Brussels, in principle on December 15, 2024. However, even slow train travelers are not all convinced.
Opinions differ
Her travel bag on her back, Roxanne, 26, is regarding to board her fuchsia pink train in the direction of Dijon. If the journey is 2h47 instead of 1h35 by TGV, it is the price, 25 euros per ticket, which convinced this history student. “I said to myself half an hour (1h10) more for 20 euros less it’s still beneficial. Frankly, if I can take a TGV at the same price as a slow train, I’ll take a TGV”, she assures the microphone of Europe 1.
And for longer journeys, rail users have even more questions. “Unless the price is really cheaper, on a long journey I prefer to take less time, especially if I’m going further to be able to enjoy more where I will be,” admits Noémie, 15, a regular on the Paris- Bordeaux. But for Marianne, 28, spending more time on the train is not a problem.
This French teacher in Portugal, accustomed to long train journeys, has even planned something to take care of. “I downloaded podcasts, I downloaded episodes of series, I have books, I have my embroidery. I’m ready. Often I only do a quarter of what I planned because I finish by looking at the landscape”, admits the professor. With two to three slow trains per day, the SNCF recorded 1.3 million passengers in one year.
