Too many, hair salons face a “historic peak” of bankruptcies

2023-08-02 07:57:55

From January 1 to June 30, 602 liquidation, reorganization and safeguard procedures were opened before the commercial courts for hairdressing salons, according to the firm Altares, an increase of 49% compared to the same period of 2022, and even 181% compared to 2021.

“Regulation” of the sector

« Over the whole of 2023, I cannot rule out that we will reach a historic peak in failures, well over a thousand procedures “, anticipates Thierry Millon, director of studies at Altares. In the last 25 years, only 2015 exceeded this symbolic bar, with 1,089 failures.

« Nothing alarming “Nevertheless for Christophe Doré, president of the National Union of Hairdressing Companies (Unec), who sees in it a” regulation of the sector.

« Since the Covid, there are a large number of hairdressing establishments that have been created, but perhaps there are too many “, he advances, “ it is not by multiplying the salons that we will be able to better share the cake ».

France now has more than 100,000 hairdressing establishments, two-thirds of which are salons (the others being mainly home hairdressers), compared to 85,000 five years ago, according to data from the A C.

According to Thierry Millon, the most vulnerable establishments are “ independent salons, small in size with generally less than three employees », located in medium-sized towns or metropolises. They suffer from local competition, especially from the big chains.

“Inflation and new habits”

These lounges, not particularly rich, with a not very large margin ” are in ” the impossibility of coping with lasting difficulties “, notes Thierry Millon, who also assures that he “ is not uncommon to have actors who have two months of cash in front of them, no more ».

Confinement, curfew, rising energy costs: salons have not been spared difficulties for three years, with the recent decline in household purchasing power due to inflation.

In her small salon with a pink storefront located near the Place de la Nation in Paris, Carole Cuach, hairdresser for more than 18 years, observed “a change in strategy” by certain consumers, who are more careful regarding spending.

The president of Unec points to the effects of inflation and the new habits taken with confinement and teleworking.

Health and beauty centers are in a similar situation but to a lesser extent, according to the firm Altares. It counted 389 failures among these establishments in the first half of the year, an increase of 30% compared to the same period of 2022.
