Putschists in Niger close airspace

2023-08-06 22:26:48

According to the putschists, Niger will close its airspace at the end of an ultimatum by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) once morest the new military junta. The junta justified the step, which was valid “until further notice”, in a statement on Sunday evening with the “risk of intervention”, which would become clearer as a result of “preparations” in neighboring countries. The measure applies to “all aircraft”.

Any attempt to violate airspace will result in a “vigorous and immediate counter-reaction.” At midnight (local time; Monday, 01:00 a.m. CEST) an ultimatum issued by ECOWAS to the putschists a week ago to allow Mohamed Bazoum, the Nigerian head of state who was ousted on July 26, to return to office will expire. Otherwise, a “use of force” cannot be ruled out.
